Substance Abuse Testing
Substance abuse continues to be a significant concern for organizations among both employees and independent contract worker populations. Based upon a 2020 National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics report 21.4% of people 12 and over have used illegal drugs or misused prescription drugs within the last year. Illicit use of drugs or alcohol can create dire consequences for employers including increased absenteeism, workplace injuries, physical and financial harm to patients and clients, and increased risk of employee or contractor theft. Further, irreparable financial and reputational harm can occur if it is determined an employer could have mitigated the risk posed due to illicit drug or alcohol and failed to take reasonable measures to ensure the safety of their workforce or the public at large.
Conducting pre-employment drug testing on all potential hires and contractors can aid in identifying a substance abuser before they can cause harm to your organization. Further, maintaining a company drug free workplace policy that includes random a drug screening program (where legally available), reasonable suspicion testing and post-accident screening helps ensure workers clearly understand the consequences of illicit drug and alcohol use on the job. Maintaining a comprehensive drug screening program can also help mitigate organization-wide legal and financial risk.
