In an attempt to end the cycle of pay discrimination, a wave of state and local governments are increasingly passing legislation and regulations which prohibit employers from asking for salary history from job applicants.
A few of these laws also preclude employers from relying on individual pay history to set compensation if discovered or volunteered, and still others prohibit employers from
disciplining employees for discussing wages with their coworkers.
On the other side of the same coin, there are a small minority of states who have bucked the trend and passed laws that prohibit salary history bans.
